Bali Monkey Rescue Java: A New Chapter
As the name suggests, Bali Monkey Rescue has always been based on the beautiful island of Bali. But over the past year, our work has expanded beyond the island, with the creation of a new branch of BMR in Magelang, Central Java.
The story of BMR Java began with two young men, Joe and Tommy, who were already rescuing monkeys in the Magelang area. They were doing what they could to help macaques in need, but with very little support behind them and without operating under a registered NGO, there was a limit to what they could achieve alone.
They reached out to Sari at Bali Monkey Rescue and asked for help.
Before agreeing to anything, members of the BMR team travelled to Magelang to see the situation for themselves, meet the people involved and make sure everything was legitimate. What they found was a genuine effort to help monkeys who desperately needed somewhere to go.
And so, almost a year ago, BMR Java was born.
Since then, the centre has continued to grow and is now home to 18 long-tailed macaques and one pig-tailed macaque, each with their own history and individual needs.
A Brand-New Home
More recently, BMR Java has taken another huge step forward.
The rescue centre has relocated to a brand-new site, giving us more space and a much better foundation from which to care for the animals and develop the centre for the future.
Moving to the new site is incredibly exciting, but there's still a lot of work to do.
Bali Monkey Rescue receives no government funding or grants. Everything we do is made possible through donations and the commitment of the people behind the rescue.
Sari has personally funded the vast majority of the work required to build and establish the new Java centre. Without that support, quite simply, much of what has already been achieved wouldn't have been possible.
But no individual's money pot is infinite.
And now we need some help.
Three Gentlemen Need New Homes
One of our priorities at the new centre is building larger, more suitable enclosures for several of our macaques — in particular, three of our larger male gentlemen currently living with us.
We've received a quote of approximately £800 to build all three enclosures.
£800 is a significant amount of money for a small rescue like ours. But at the same time, it isn't such an enormous target that we don't believe we can achieve it together.
Twenty people donating £40 would get us there.
Forty people donating £20 would get us there.
Even a few pounds, when added to somebody else's few pounds, gets us a little bit closer.
And ultimately, behind that £800 figure are three individual animals whose daily lives can be made significantly better.
Can You Help Us Build Them?
There is still so much we want to achieve at BMR Java. The new site gives us the space and opportunity to improve the lives of the macaques already in our care while continuing to provide somewhere safe for animals who may need us in the future.
But we cannot do it alone.

We're incredibly proud of how far BMR Java has come.
