Help Dewi Fight for Her Life: An Urgent Appeal from Bali Monkey Rescue

3 min read

She was hit by a car and left lying at the side of the road. Somehow, this tiny little monkey survived. But her fight is far from over.

Meet Dewi, a young female macaque who has already endured more suffering than any animal should ever have to experience.

Dewi was found lying seriously injured at the side of a road in Lombok after being struck by a vehicle. Thankfully, someone spotted her and, rather than leaving her there, decided to help.

They brought her to DMH Surf Camp in Lombok, a business owned by Sari, the manager of Bali Monkey Rescue. Knowing Sari's involvement in rescuing and caring for monkeys, they hoped she would be able to save this little girl's life.

And it's a good thing they did, because Dewi was in a truly terrible condition.

The front of her skull had been badly damaged, leaving two open wounds that were bleeding heavily. She was suffering repeated seizures, her oxygen levels were dangerously low, and her heartbeat was frighteningly slow.

For a while, it really did look as though we were going to lose her.

A Little Monkey Who Refused to Give Up

Sari, the founder of Bali Monkey Rescue, who is currently studying veterinary medicine in Indonesia, immediately began treating Dewi.

With urgent medication, constant monitoring and an enormous amount of patience, Sari managed to get her through those terrifying first stages.

Against the odds, Dewi survived.

But surviving the initial trauma was only the beginning.

Dewi also suffered an injury to one of her hands, which she has been unable to lift properly. Sari has been carefully cleaning her head wounds every day and gently massaging her injured hand as part of her ongoing care.

And slowly, little by little, Dewi is showing signs of improvement.

There are changes in her condition that give us hope. Small steps forward that mean an enormous amount when you consider just how close she came to losing her life.

But we have to be realistic. Dewi has suffered severe injuries, and her recovery is going to take time. She will need continued monitoring, specialist veterinary assessment and treatment, and a great deal of ongoing care.

We don't yet know what her long-term recovery will look like. What we do know is that she deserves every possible chance.

48 Monkeys Already Depend on Bali Monkey Rescue

Dewi will continue to receive care through Bali Monkey Rescue in Bali, where the team is already responsible for 48 rescued monkeys.

Every single one of these animals has a story. Some have been rescued from the illegal pet trade. Others have suffered injuries, neglect or circumstances that have left them unable to survive safely on their own.

They all need food, safe accommodation, enrichment, veterinary treatment and daily care.

And now little Dewi needs our help too.

Cases like hers can place enormous pressure on a small rescue organisation. Specialist veterinary care, medication, wound treatment and the everyday costs of looking after so many animals all add up.

But when an injured animal arrives needing help, we cannot simply turn our backs because the rescue centre is already full.

Dewi didn't choose to be hit by a car. She didn't choose to suffer these terrible injuries.

She is simply a little monkey who wants to survive.

Please Help Us Give Dewi a Fighting Chance

We are urgently asking for donations to help provide Dewi with the ongoing care she needs, while continuing to support the other 48 monkeys who depend on Bali Monkey Rescue.

Whether you can give £5, £10, £20 or more, your donation will help us meet the costs of veterinary care, medication, food and the daily essentials needed to keep our rescued monkeys safe and cared for.

And if you aren't in a position to donate, please consider sharing Dewi's story. Every share helps us reach someone who might be able to help.

Dewi has already fought so hard to stay alive.

Now it's our turn to fight for her.

Please donate today and help us give Dewi, and every monkey in our care, the future they deserve.

Thank you for standing with Bali Monkey Rescue. Every little bit of kindness makes a difference. 🧡
